The Photographer Becomes The Photographed

We photographers tend to stay behind the camera, opting to capture others instead of being the captured 🙂 However, a couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity (and indeed the pleasure) to come out from behind the lens and be photographed by my niece and MAC Pro Makeup Artist, Taja Sparks.

I’ve heard it many times before, but it really is a good exercise for photographers to become the subject for many reasons… Most significant of those reasons is to remind us just how uncomfortable it can be to be the one standing in front of the camera. “Do I look fat?” “Is this my good side?” “Do I have a good side?” “Is my hair ok?” “Do I have lipstick on my teeth?” Men don’t seem to have this same plight, but ladies, you know what I’m talking about!

When you feel comfortable with the person behind the camera, you start to open up and feel better in front of it. I had a lot of fun shooting with Taja and really started to ham it up with my diva’d out makeup. Always my favorites… the candids, as were Taja’s (and that’s what she’d say ever time she released the shutter while I laughed or tried to reign in my littlest one “Oooooo…. I loooove candids”).

It’s an amazing moment when you can get someone to truly be themselves in front of the camera; for the photographer because you can capture truth and beauty in that moment and for the individual because they can themselves see what it is that everyone else sees in them.

Believe — Then just do it!
